According to Dyck and Silvestre (2018), society is becoming more aware of the need to find solutions to socio-environmental challenges through the adoption of more sustainable lifestyles. Implementing technologies that support sustainable development is a critical aspect of this challenge.

Production and consumption patterns have shifted dramatically in recent decades, resulting in societal and environmental changes as well as the creation of demands and constraints for businesses. As a result, competitiveness is becoming increasingly linked to the adoption of innovation management that includes a focus on sustainability. Hence, businesses are coming to understand the need for implementing sustainable innovation practices in order to reduce negative social and environmental consequences of their operations and, as a result, improve corporate performance. Both new legislation and society's changing values are mandating businesses to combine innovation in goods, services, processes, and business models with a commitment to long-term sustainability.

At the core, sustainable innovation is all about the invention of anything new that enhances performance in the three areas of sustainable development: social, environmental, and economic. Processes, operational procedures, business models, and business systems are all areas with the potential for advances that aren't restricted to technological advances. Sustainability-oriented innovation entails altering philosophical and organizational values, as well as products, processes, or practices, in order to achieve the specific goal of creating and realizing social and environmental value beyond financial returns. We can see that sustainable innovation refers to a company's strategic and systematic approach to economic, social, and environmental issues, rather than isolated actions, like the creation of new more ecologically responsible processes and products.

At the initial phase of this shift, many of the most responsible firms develop principles that entrench what was essential to them at the core of their operations - ideals that may not necessarily be linked to sustainability. Reflecting on their values allows them to get a better understanding of their larger business system, as well as the risks, effects, and possibilities that enable it to integrate sustainability into their core principles.

Once this is accomplished, the next step is to demonstrate the viability of the corporation's plan. To achieve this, project leaders often begin with a modest project in their department or division, and further refine the project over time so that it may be up-scaled and transferred to other key areas within the corporation. The case for its implementation is made by estimating the project's benefits - usually quantified in terms of increased profits or other advantages.

Next, the executive/manager can create a green team. A green team can look at sustainability possibilities and find projects that are of low cost but offer high returns. The manager should collaborate with people who share the same goal with them for a more environmentally friendly business. A corporation attempting to become more sustainable reacts to inputs in order to choose the best course of action. When a company is at this stage, its executives must be open-minded and always ready to redirect operations (when appropriate).

Executives will also need to create public awareness, because change necessitates education. To promote accomplishments and educate others about the implications of sustainability, they may use websites, newsletters, bulletin boards, discussion groups, or other forms of communication. People usually appreciate a clear explanation of how more sustainable practices will affect them. If a firm has progressed beyond the stage of incremental sustainability improvements (when the aforementioned is achieved), it may approach the adoption of sustainability as a broad strategy.
